PTSD. Post Traumatic Stress Disorder

“PTSD is a disorder that develops in some people who have experienced a shocking, scary, or dangerous event.

It is natural to feel afraid during & after a traumatic situation. Fear triggers many split-second changes in the body to help defend against danger or to avoid it. This “fight-or-flight” response is a typical reaction meant to protect a person from harm. Nearly everyone will experience a range of reactions after trauma, yet most people recover from initial symptoms naturally. Those who continue to experience problems may be diagnosed with PTSD. People who have PTSD may feel stressed or frightened even when they are not in danger.”

You don’t choose when it hits you. Unfortunately, it can hit you when you LEAST EXPECT it…like while watching a movie.

The very first time hubs & I watched, “The Book of Eli,” I was not expecting an intense scene that was headed toward sexual assault. Flashbacks of my personal experiences came pouring into mind. My heart started to race. My entire body began to shake & I always go to a place in my mind where everything is chaos. I ended up flooded with tears & hyperventilating.

That is what always happens with sexual assault & domestic violence triggers.

Same thing happened when watching, “The Last House on the Left.” The list of movies that have gotten to me is endless.

Whenever I see something lead to sexual assault or domestic violence, my warning bells could go off. The worst is when I’m in public, like the movie theater for example.

For me personally, I think the hardest part is not being able to control it. I’m very much so a control freak (something that is actually pretty common in those who’ve been through traumatic experiences – I’ve been this way since childhood due to sexual assault). I need to be the master of my thoughts, feelings, & body.

If only it were that easy…
